This is a semi-hardened steel forged piton for thin, parallel-sided cracks in limestone or granite. 
 
The larger the area of contact of the blade of the piton in the rock after hammering it in, the better the piton will hold. On vertical pitons, the blade and eye are aligned. These pitons are used in flush, vertical cracks
